For digital creators, photographers, and organizational teams, managing image description metadata at scale has historically been a significant workflow challenge. For existing galleries and archives, addressing thousands of images missing alt text often feels insurmountable. For new content, writing descriptions from scratch for every single upload can be daunting, especially when alt text was already crafted by photographers or colleagues earlier in production.
With the release of WordPress 7.0, an exciting new world of efficiency and web accessibility opens up. Thanks to a major core update that reads modern XMP metadata formats, WordPress can now automatically import IPTC Alt Text (Accessibility) and Extended Description (Accessibility) properties directly from image files upon upload. This preserves existing descriptions so content teams never have to start from a blank slate, while opening up new bulk-editing possibilities to bring existing libraries up to high-quality standards.

Attendees will discover the key differences between traditional metadata (like Headline or Caption) and these new dedicated accessibility fields, along with how embedded metadata serves as a portable “source of truth” across newsrooms, museum archives, and product libraries. Finally, a practical demo will show how embedded metadata provides a strong baseline description that can be easily adapted to fit the unique context of any web page, saving hours of effort while keeping final contextual review where it belongs: in the hands of the publisher.
