Georgetown, Texas, March 14, 2025 – WP Accessibility Day is pleased to announce that it has officially been granted 501(c)(3) public charity status by the Internal Revenue Service. This designation marks a significant milestone in the organization’s mission to advance accessibility awareness within the WordPress community and the broader digital landscape.
Previously, WP Accessibility Day operated under the nonprofit umbrella of Knowbility, a well-respected organization dedicated to digital accessibility. This positive partnership mutually benefited both WP Accessibility Day and Knowbility. However, in an effort to establish greater autonomy and expand its impact, WP Accessibility Day’s board members, Amber Hinds, Joe Dolson, and Bet Hannon, decided to pursue independent nonprofit status.
“With this new designation, WP Accessibility Day is poised to expand its efforts in promoting accessibility within WordPress and beyond,” said Amber Hinds, President of WP Accessibility Day. “We are excited about the opportunities this brings, including increasing our ability to fundraise, grow our events, and directly support the disability community through additional future programs.”
Looking ahead into 2025, WP Accessibility Day has ambitious plans to further its mission. In addition to hosting its annual WordPress Accessibility Day conference on October 15-16, the organization will hold a special event for Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) on May 15. Planning for the GAAD and WP Accessibility Day events are underway, and interested parties are encouraged to join the WP Accessibility Day email list to get notified as more information is available.
Beyond events, the WP Accessibility Day board aims to build a fund to compensate people with disabilities for testing WordPress core or community plugins. Public charity status will make it easier for individuals and organizations to donate to support this fund and other WP Accessibility Day initiatives.
About WP Accessibility Day
The WP Accessibility Day nonprofit was founded in 2023 by Amber Hinds, Joe Dolson, and Bet Hannon, to support volunteers worldwide organizing the annual WordPress Accessibility Day conference. The conference was started in 2020 by the WordPress core Accessibility Team and 2025 marks the 5th year of the event.
WordPress Accessibility Day takes place online with a 24-hour single track of presentations. Attendees can register for free and watch live streams of talks held via Zoom with live captions and American Sign Language (ASL) Interpretation. After the conference ends, presentations are edited, transcribed, captioned, and made freely available on the web.
